Announcing the 2024 Writing Competition and Award: “Arbitration’s Impact on the Environment and Human Rights”
California Arbitration (CalArb) is excited to invite law students and young legal practitioners to participate in our prestigious annual Writing Competition and Award. This is a unique opportunity to delve into critical global issues and showcase your analytical skills.
Who Can Participate?
- Open to all law students and lawyers with less than 10 years of practice.
Competition Theme:
- Focus: Investor-State dispute settlement’s impact on environmental protection and human rights.
- Examine the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment’s report (UN Doc. A/78/168, 13 July 2023).
- Challenge: Critically analyze the Special Rapporteur’s concerns about investor-State arbitration and propose how international arbitration can effectively address environmental and human rights concerns.
Submission Guidelines:
- Length: 15-20 pages (including footnotes), with standard margins, minimum 12 point font, and 1.5 line spacing.
- Language: English.
- Originality: Must be the participant’s original work.
- Deadline: Email submissions to info@calarb.org by August 2, 2024. Include a résumé and headshot for publication.
Rewarding Excellence:
- Winner Announcement: August 30, 2024.
- Prize: $1,500 cash award, publication on CalArb’s website, and distribution to all members.
- Plus, all eligible participants submitting a qualifying entry will receive one year of free CalArb membership!
Judging Process:
- A blind, objective, and non-discriminatory review will determine the winner.
