Biography

Timothy Hughes is an independent lawyer and arbitrator based in Calgary, Alberta. Over more than fifteen years in practice, Tim has wide-ranging experience resolving domestic and international commercial disputes, including matters relating to joint ventures and M&A transactions, IP licensing, breaches of contract, business torts, pharmaceutical commercialization, securities, sales of goods, and real property. He has particular depth of practice in the energy and resources sectors (oil & gas, mining), power generation and transportation construction projects, financial services, life sciences, IP, and hotel management. Before starting his independent practice in 2022, Tim practiced with leading international law firms in Washington D.C., Hong Kong, and New York City.

Tim obtained his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, where he was a research assistant to Professor David D. Caron and earned a certificate of specialization in international law. He is admitted to the bar in Alberta, California, and New York, and has experience working to resolve disputes involving a range of governing laws in arbitrations seated around the world. Beyond his practice, Tim is a frequent commentator on Canadian and international arbitration law and has lectured at the McGill University Faculty of Law and the University of Calgary. He is deeply engaged in his community, volunteering with Calgary Legal Guidance’s pro bono clinics and serving as a member and former vice-chair of the Calgary Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, a quasi-judicial tribunal adjudicating land use and development appeals.
