California Arbitration – Membership Events and Celebrations

It’s time for celebrations! CalArb is one-year old and things are humming – so much so that it’s almost hard to keep track of everything! Thanks to our many active committee chairs and committee members for all their hard work. Here’s a glimpse of some of what’s going on:

  1. CalArb Events:  There are a slew of upcoming international arbitration events in California, including planned visits by SIAC and HKIAC next week. Upcoming programs include the following:
  • Nov 5 – CalArb/California Lawyers Assn – Arbitrating Domestic and Transnational IP – Marriott Laguna Cliffs

Several CalArb members are waving the flag at the IBA Annual Conference in Miami. Nov 14 is the start of NY Arbitration Week and the AAA/ICC/ICSID Joint Colloquium for those of you who may be traveling to the East Coast before Thanksgiving (or want to participate online). Washington Arbitration Week starts November 28.  As well, CalArb is supporting JCAA with its Nov. 18 Anniversary webinar.

Our Programming Committee is working on an array of additional events – from our California Conversations program interviewing CalArb members to monthly law firm hosted events. And you’ve all received information on our Joint Planning Committee working with the California Lawyers Association on programming for 2023 California International Arbitration Week (March 13-17 2023). Invitations for organizations to make program proposals are going out this month – more details to follow.

If you’re a CalArb member speaking at an international arbitration or ADR event, let’s get it on the CalArb Events calendar! And If you or your firm/company want to be involved or host any programs, please let us know.

2. CalArb Member Holiday Parties:  CalArb members are invited to our CalArb holiday parties – co-hosted with CIArb and graciously sponsored by Jones Day. We’ll have parties in both N.Cal and S.Cal so no one has an excuse they can’t attend (and members are invited to attend both!):

  • Dec 5 – S. Cal. Holiday Party – LA
  • Dec 7 – N. Cal. Holiday Party – SF

Details coming soon.

3. Committees: Nearly all of our Committees are meeting regularly and planning initiatives including educational programs; law school and young practitioner opportunities; law firm, corporate and arbitration institution outreach; and legislative/government initiatives. Details coming soon on the CalArb International Writing Competition!

Our Membership Committee is particularly eager to have new members. If you’d like to join the Membership Committee or are interested joining any of the other CalArb committees, please let us know. (And if you’ve already asked and haven’t received a response, please forgive us and reach out again!) The full list of Committees with descriptions is on the CalArb website. https://calarb.org/leadership/

4. Member Opportunities: Members should review the latest member email for details on training and other opportunities.

5. Leadership: Giorgio Sassine has been appointed CalArb’s Corporate Secretary. Giorgio fills the role held by Ben Jones who is taking on an assigment in Southeast Asia. Our thanks to Ben and congratulations to Giorgio.

Annual leadership elections will be held in the Spring following California International Arbitration Week. Details to follow.

Thanks again to all our members for your support of CalArb. We’re growing every day. We’re a grass-roots organization where everyone interested can find a role that fits them. CalArb is here to help you – whether you’re a young practitioner or experienced counsel in the field. Let’s talk about ways to learn, network, promote and grow your practice.

We’re enthusiastic about supporting law firms, corporations, providers, and practitioners who see the potential for expanding international arbitration and ADR opportunities in California.  Please reach out – to our executive team: Gary Benton, Dana Welch, Laura Abrahamson, Jeff Daar, Marcus Quintanilla or Giorgio Sassine – and let’s work together.  Contact us directly or reach out to CalArb at info@calarb.org.
