Dear CalArb Members:

Happy New Year!

Registration for California International Arbitration Week is now open!

2024 California International Arbitration Week Registration (whova.com)

We have assembled a wide-ranging and fascinating program.  Our program ranges from international arbitration in entertainment and sports, to energy innovation, to arbitrating in the time of trade wars, to arbitration in China and Japan, to thorny ethical issues for international arbitrators, to AI, to international mediation, to the in-house perspective on resolving tech disputes.  This year will be a live event (with remote access available) with speakers converging on San Francisco from China, Japan, Germany, Korea, and of course, from California and elsewhere in the U.S.  Every evening will feature a social event, including a reception sponsored by JAMS at the DeYoung Museum.  Interested in being a sponsor and having your practice highlighted in marketing?  Please respond to this email.   Additionally, consider posting a link to the registration page on your LinkedIn or other social media channels!

Join a committee!

Programming committee:  In addition to sponsoring webinars, including one on February 6, 2024 entitled “Gulf echoes:  A global dialogue on energy developments”, the programming committee hosts California Conversations which is posted on our YouTube channel.  Each of the Conversations features one of our members discussing their practice and topics of interest.  Want to participate?  Respond to this email.

International Arbitration Institutions and Organizations Committee:  Our reach is global!  CalArb will co-host an event at Riyadh International Disputes Week in March. CalArb members Drew Holiner and Giorgio Sassine will be speaking live! Click here for more information.

Membership committee:  The membership committee will be launching the mentorship program at California International Arbitration Week.  CalArb members who want to apply to be mentees will be available then.  The program will consist of regular group sessions that will address every stage of the arbitration process, led by members who are seasoned arbitrators.

Young CalArb:  Young CalArb is hosting three “Day in the Life of an Arbitrator” panels:  at Stanford on January 26, at UC Berkeley on February 1, and at Pepperdine on February 15.  They will also host the not-to-be-missed closing event at California International Arbitration Week – a trivia night at a venue TBD.

Law firms and Corporations committee:  This committee is extending our outreach to law firms with international arbitration practices in California where we don’t currently have CalArb members.  The focus will be on promoting attendance and sponsorship of CIAW.

Marketing CommitteeHave you submitted your photo and short bio to be posted to the website?  It’s a great member benefit and way to promote your practice.  It’s easy to do so.  Instructions were circulated by email on December 18, 2023.  if you need help, please respond to this email.

Legislative Update

AB 615, which would modernize California’s international commercial code (see Code Civ. Proc., §1297.11 et seq.) by incorporating the 2006 UNCITRAL amendments, will be brought to the floor by Assemblyperson Maienschein (District 76, Northern San Diego County).  Thanks to the California Lawyers Association and to our Board Chair Dan Kolkey and others for diligently working on this legislation.

2028 ICCA Bid

As you know, CalArb and ICDR have submitted a bid to host ICCA 2028 in San Francisco.  We will shortly find out whether we have been short-listed.  If (when) we succeed, we will be preparing a more extensive bid document.  A number of us will be traveling in May to ICCA 2024 in Hong Kong to present our bid.

We have an action-packed year ahead of us.  Thanks to all of you for your efforts and enthusiasm.

All my best,
Dana Welch
President, CalArb
