What California International Arbitration Means to Me: Eric Z. Chang

What California International Arbitration Means to Me: Eric Z. Chang, Chang Law

My practice focuses on international commercial arbitration and investment treaty arbitration. My matters and clients come from all over the world, and my practice needs to have a global reach. Anchoring my practice in California gives me that reach. We are uniquely blessed by geography: from my home perch in Los Angeles, I have serviced clients and matters in Asia, Canada, Western and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Indian Pacific region, and various countries in Africa. As the world’s fifth largest economy, California also gives me an in-state platform: business comes to us! On that point, my practice benefits from a progressive jurisdiction for international disputes, with a world-class bar and judiciary. California provides one of the most stable, secure, and business-friendly environments in the world in which to undertake commerce, and, when need be, resolve disputes.

Then there are the intangible benefits: there is a limitless energy and optimism in California that is hard to find anywhere else in the world. We welcome dreamers and entrepreneurs. When I undertook my own journey moving from BigLaw to build my own practice, relocating to California was the easiest part of that otherwise life-changing decision. The startup mentality here is positively infectious. Much of that is due to our can-do settler and immigrant history – California is incredibly diverse in its cultures, backgrounds, and outlooks, but we Californians all share a common bond of risk-taking, reinvention, and relentless hustle. It’s really difficult to put into words how much this positive mentality permeates everything we do here – I’ve lived and worked in Europe, the East Coast, and even the Middle East, and there’s nothing quite like living and doing business in the Golden State. I guess I can say that I am a proud Son of California through and through!
