Biography

With nearly 40 years of experience, Robert A. Shives, Jr. (Rob) has subject matter expertise in all manner of domestic and multinational technology (software, hardware and IP transfers) transactions, general commercial contracts, as well as employee relations and employee-employer related disputes.

He is a 1978 graduate of Wesleyan University and 1984 graduate of the Stanford Law School where he served on the Stanford Journal of International Law. Among other things, he has:

(1) Been appointed as a Panel Arbitrator in dozens of commercial/consumer/international cases involving, among other things, Intellectual Property, Privacy, Transportation, Telecom, Discrimination, Credit and Tax issues;

(2) Managed and supervised teams of in-house and outside litigation/arbitration counsel in connection with the litigation, arbitration and mediation of dozens of domestic and international commercial disputes;

(3) Directed the disposition through arbitration, litigation or mediation of numerous labor, employment and employee benefit disputes in the US, UK, Germany and Italy;

(4) Guided, mediated and resolved dozens of patent infringement claims concerning various IT, desktop & mobile computer technologies as well as server, automotive, mobile phone technologies, and other intellectual property (trademark and trade secret) disputes brought in various federal courts around the US;

(5) Trained with American Arbitration Association (AAA) and its International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) as wells as Nevada’s Court Annexed Arbitration Program; attended various ICDR, International Commercial Court (ICC) arbitration MCLE programs and has spoken on panels with the ICDR in New York, Los Angeles & San Francisco and on programs throughout the country produced by the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) - where he also served previously as a member of the Board of Directors and in executive leadership positions, including Chapter President of ACC’s largest chapter - San Francisco.

Rob currently serves as:

(1) An International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) Panelist as well as a panelist for AAA Consumer Panel and Commercial Panel;

(2) A California Advisory Committee Member of the ICDR;

(3) A Board Member and Executive Committee Member of the California International Arbitration Council (CIAC); and

(4) A Founding Member of California Arbitration.

In addition to service as an Independent Arbitrator, he currently serves as General Counsel for Shinko Electric America, an industry leading producer of integrated semiconductor products and services located in San Jose, CA.

He has formerly been a senior in-house counsel and business executive for Fujitsu in the US & abroad; a senior domestic in-house lawyer with AT&T and an associate and legal researcher at major commercial, labor & employment, litigation and ADR law firms in Los Angeles, Philadelphia & New York as well as a federal judicial law clerk in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
